In what was just his first season of race-riding, James Murphy rode his first winner at Punchestown in February 2018 aboard the veteran Bothair Clei, whilst also studying for his Leaving Certificate at the time, in what was a real family success, as the horse was trained by his father Daniel and also ran in the colours of his mother Geraldine. Murphy's father Daniel is a well-known trainer having saddled Gentle Alice to finish placed in a number of Graded races, whilst also consigning young horses under the Walshtown Stud banner.
