Tipperary native James English, a graduate of the Equitation course at Kildalton College in Co. Kilkenny, did not have to wait long for his first winner, which came aboard the Garret Power-trained Itsanoldcliche at Cragmore in Februray 2017, a matter of weeks after the same horse provided him with his first ride at Nenagh. A nephew of well-known journalist and photographer Siobhan English, James had his busiest season during the 2017/18 campaign with a total of 12 rides.
