Aaron Murphy is from a well-known equestrian family, with his brother Ciaran a successful handler who previously rode between the flags himself, whilst brother Joseph has represented Ireland at the Olympics in Eventing. Murphy got off the mark between the flags aboard Green Wellies at Roscommon in November 2007, and Dot Love's Leading Counsel gelding would provide him with two further winners that season, including a maiden track success in a Downpatrick Hunter Chase a month later.
