James Sampson made his racecourse debut back in December 2023 when he rode Mr Bezi in a Limerick bumper for Denis Hogan. It was also Hogan that provided James with his first points ride aboard Hummus at Boulta in November 2024. Sampson did not have to wait too long before visiting the winners' enclosure as he scored on Macgiloney for Hogan in an Oldcastle Open contest in late March 2025, on what was only his eighth outing in point-to-points.
