Jody Townend hails from a family steeped within racing, as her older brother Paul is a former Champion National Hunt Jockey. It was a horse, King Willie, trained by her father Tim, that provided her with her initial winner between the flags, when the pair came home in front at Grennan in November 2015. Townend, who has also guided former Champion Pointer Ourmanmassini to success in a round of the ITM Series, recorded her first winner under rules aboard another horse trained by her father, Port Rashid, in a Tramore maiden hurdle in April 2018, with her biggest success to date coming aboard the Willie Mullins-trained Great White Shark at the 2019 Galway Races Festival shortly after her return from a lay-off forced by a T12 vertabrae injury.
