Paul Bannon did not follow a typical path to a riding career, as with no family connection to horses, he moved from riding ponies and hunters, to hunting with the Ward Union, before a first pointing ride at Necarne in May 2011. It was on a horse that he owned, Ericus Erici, trained by Shane Cawley, that he rode his first points winner at Castletown-Geoghegan in 2016. Paul has a number of track winners to his name, the first of which came at Fairyhouse in October 2015 on Mental Strength for Gillian Callaghan. It was also the Meath-based Callaghan who supplied the him with his first four-year-old maiden winner, Dream On John, at Boulta in 2018.
