Third-time lucky for Carrig Wells at Cork

It was a case of third-time lucky for Carrig Wells in the Rathbarry & Glenview Studs mares maiden hunter chase as she battled gamely to take the Easter Monday contest on her third try in the race.

Danny Fitzgerald’s mount arrived with her challenge three-out, where the strong travelling Aleish Lass made a notable error, but the game Dul Ar Aghaidh still held claims have set the pace.

However the nine-year-old was soon in command as she went on to win by two and a quarter lengths over Darragh Allen’s mount Dul Ar Aghaidh.

Trained by Martin Fitzgerald, the Mores Wells mare had finished second in the 2022 edition of the race before falling three out in last year’s renewal.

“At the start of the season, we thought that the fire might be gone from her belly as she had been a savage, consistent mare, so that was great,” the winning rider said.

“We bumped into one two years ago in this, and then it was my own fault last year; I kicked on too soon, and she fell two-out.

“It was my own fault at Thurles. I was following Derek O’Connor, and in fairness, he got it wrong that day, too, so we had a lot of ground to make up.

“She improves with every run, and it’s great to get my second winner on the track and I have three point-to-points win too.

“I’ve a big family, and they are all here today, they come point-to-pointing with me every week so it’s great to have them here.”

His father Martin added that she would likely now going to Tramore, a race that she finished in third 12 months earlier before being aimed at the Punchestown festival.
