Win My Wings registered a 1-2 in the Coral Scottish Grand National Handicap Chase on Saturday for trainer Christian Williams and rider Rob James.
Kitty’s Light was no match for stablemate Win My Wings who went on to win by an impressive seven lengths for rider Rob James.
Sent off joint 13/2 favourite with stablemate Kitty’s Light, Win My Wings travelled strongly throughout the race for Rob and picked up the running just before four out.
The nine-year-old mare by Gold Well went clear and travelled easily after three out and couldn’t have won the race in a more impressive fashion. The winning rider stated that “I couldn’t believe I was going so well turning into the straight," he said. "I was afraid to look around in case something was going to pass me."
"She just cantered and jumped everywhere. She got into a great rhythm and took me everywhere. It was unbelievable.”
"She did everything herself and made me look good. I didn’t have to move a muscle on her. She was unreal."
It was a superb training performance by the up-and-coming trainer Christian Williams, and he has achieved this with two horses who cost less than a combined price of £15,000. Williams is continuing his fantastic start to 2022 after landing the Eider Chase and Coral Trophy on the same day in February.
Rob James is no stranger to the winner’s enclosure on the big days as he registered a first Cheltenham Festival winner and his subsequent first winner in the UK in 2020 partnering the Gordon Elliott trained Milan Native to victory in the Kim Muir. Rob has continued his Partnership with Elliott and he has been a regular booking on many of Gordon’s horses both in handicaps and amateur confined races.
With a claim of seven pounds still, Rob James is described by Mick Fitzgerald as ‘him having a seven-pound claim is like theft”. Having only ridden 13 winners on the track, Rob has seven more winners left until his claim is reduced to five pounds.
It was a prolific win for Irish point-to-pointing with Win My Wings having won her point-to-point at Lingstown in November 2018 for handler Denis Moore.
