Irish Point to Point

We were saddened to hear of the passing of well-known and popular point-to-point owner Pat Coffey.

Pat was a dairy farmer, breeder, vendor, purchaser, owner, handler, an enthusiast and a gentleman. A kind and welcoming member of the point-to-point community he will be dearly missed.

Pat began riding half-bred’s and hunting when he was younger and having bred a few thoroughbreds and sold them on he gradually made his way into racing and was very much bitten by the bug.

Pat had seen racing from all sides from buying foals and stores to offering horses as a vendor at the sales. His passion was for racing enjoying to buy young horses and watch them progress through the point-to point fields to be sold onwards.

From this, he had a long association with Wexford handler Denis Murphy stretching back over ten years and together they produced some top notch performers through the years, such as Lough Derg Spirit who is now with Paul Nicholls and Drovers Lane who enjoyed success with Rebecca Curtis, whilst Murphy’s sister Bernie produced Ard Abhainn to win at Lingstown for Pat before being going on to win at the Punchestown Festival for Gordon Elliott.

On the track Pat held a restricted licence and enjoyed running horses he trained himself under rules from his home yard and his more recent successes included Definite Soldier and Barrys Jack.

Indeed he enjoyed a double at Huntingdon in 2014 with Davy Russell aboard Saddlers Deal and That’s A Fact.

In recent years, Pat overcame the tragic loss of his Nephew Patrick McCormack who lost his life in a farm accident in January 2018.

Pat and Patrick were extremely close and this loss was felt deeply by Pat. He took great pleasure out of watching Lough Derg Rose winning at Loughanmore back in March of 2018 as this was a mare young Patrick had picked out himself before he lost his life and the pair had intended bringing her along together.

She went on to win a second time at Tinahely after this maiden success. Indeed that day she won her maiden Coffey enjoyed a double as Norwegian Woods won a maiden half an hour later.

In all, Coffey enjoyed close to 50 winners in his own colours, an achievement he was immensely proud of.

Pat was based at Boulagloss Stables in Carrigwoher and lost his life in a tragic accident on Tuesday near Portroe in Tipperary.

At point-to-points each week we look forward to the return of all those who cannot be in the field each week and it will be a lonelier place this weekend knowing that Pat Coffey wont be returning to us.

He will be dearly missed by his partner Brid his family nieces and nephews whom he kept ponies for.
