First four-year-old winner of 2019 set for rules debut

The first four-year-old maiden winner of 2019 will appear under rules when Slip Road takes to the track at Limerick on Sunday afternoon.

The grey son of Shantou got off the mark in a messy conclusion to the slowly run 2m 4f four-year-old contest at Oldtown in February, when getting the better of Warren Ewing’s Bold Assassin, a horse that was subsequently bought by Henry de Bromhead for £150,000 at the Cheltenham sales, by a short-head.

Himself a €95,000 purchase as an unraced three-year-old at the Land Rover sale, Pat Doyle’s charge was declared to make his rules debut at the Munster course earlier this month, before subsequently being declared a non-runner on the morning of the race.

Carrying the colours of Dai Walters, who recently enjoyed Cheltenham Festival success with William Money in the Coral Cup, Slip Road is pitched in at the deep end for his rules debut which he makes in Sunday's Listed contest.

Walters will be hoping that the grey son of Shantou will be able emulate the track debut of Angels Breath, a horse with a similar profile to Slip Road, being a similar grey son of Shantou that also won his four-year-old maiden at the first time of asking for Doyle, before winning a Grade 2 at Ascot on his rules debut this season.

Slip Road will have the assistance of Patrick Mullins as he takes on nine rivals in the €40,000 contest, including a pair of Naas Bumper winners in Aliym and Barnes Des Mottes.
