Next Gen | Eoin Powell

Name: Eoin Powell

Age: 20

From: Armagh

Armagh native Eoin Powell rode his first winner aboard his fathers Hymie Weiss trained by Liam Lennon, in Tyrella earlier this month.

How did you get involved with horses?

I started at home with ponies, I then did a bit of showjumping. I left school at sixteen and went straight to RACE. I have always wanted to become a jockey.

I went to Ken Condon’s when I left RACE and stayed there for a year and a half. Covid hit then and I went back home.

Where are you working full-time?

I work at Liam Lennon’s yard full time.

How did you begin working at Liam Lennons?

I went with in to his yard with my dad and asked him for a job there. I started the following morning and have been here ever since.

Does your family own Hymie Weiss?

Yeah, my dad owns him. We bought him on Liam's advice from Noel Meade. He’s very easy to ride out so I only ride him in his races.

The girls in the yard usually ride him out. He's a real bus in his races and jumps well, I've learned a lot from him.

Were you expecting a big run?

Yea, we weren’t too sure if we would run him to be honest. He had been third in his previous run in at Armagh, its a very tough track.

When the ground was a bit quicker, we weren’t too keen to run but he was fresh and well during the week. The quicker pace helped as he jumped well and stayed galloping to the line.

Did you get some kick out of riding your first winner?

Yes, it was some buzz to get over the line in front. It was unreal.

Were your family there on the day?

My dad and brother were there. That was great. It was great for Liam too, he's just back after being sick so it was brilliant.

Is there someone that you regularly seek advice from?

Yea, I regularly meet up with Noel McParlan and Tommy Reilly for schooling and galloping. They have given me a lot of help and advice.

Do you know what the plan for Hymie Weiss is now?

He will go to Down Royal on St. Patrick’s Day, it will be my first ride on the track so I’m looking forward to that.

What are your ambitions for the remainder of the season?

To get more rides and more experience. It's hard to get going but I’ll keep my head down and work hard.

Was it always your plan to take out your license?

Yeah, I've always wanted to become a jockey.

What’s the best advice you have been given?

Liam once said to me when going to the last to not look at the fence and pretend it's not there. And hopefully, they will come up!

Are there any up-and-coming riders we should be keeping an eye out for?

Not that I can think of. There are very few young riders around here.

Have you any interests/hobbies outside of racing?

Yeah, I played Gaelic with my local club Carrickcrubbin. I gave it up after I had a bad fall. I have four pins and a plate in my shoulder.
