Sayce Gold completes memorable double for Chris O Donovan

Sayce Gold ran out a very comfortable winner of the Irish EBF mares point-to-point bumper to give jockey Chris O’Donovan a double on what was a big day for those in the point-to-point community.

The Mallow native was seen to particularly good effect aboard the seven-year-old who entered the race with previous bumper experience having finished third at Cork in January, and last year’s Boulta winner traveled very strongly throughout.

Sent off as a 2/1 shot, O’Donovan sent Mick Winters’ Gold Well mare on approaching the home bend getting first run on the field and from that point the former Champion Under-21 rider only had to look around for dangers as they went on to defeat the favourite, The Mean Queen, by five lengths without having to be asked for maximum effort.

Gavin Cromwell’s Tattersalls runner-up Eyre Square was a further three and a quarter lengths back in third with the eight-length Turtulla winner back in fourth for John Barry and Gerry Kelleher.

Carrying the colours of prolific owner Trevor Hemmings, Sayce Gold also completed a double on the card for Kanturk trainer Mick Winters.
