Over the coming weeks, we will be adding videos to some of the old point-to-point fixtures that we have on file. The next year we are adding videos from is the 2001 season.
The Newry Hunt held their first meeting of the Autumn season on a Wednesday in October 2001.
Below gives a brief re-cap of what happened on the day.
Liam Lennon got off to a good start at the Newry Hunts point-to-point fixture at Taylorstown when winning the opening four and five-year-old maiden aboard Strawberry Bob. The son of Bob Back subsequently went on to win a bumper for Willie Mullins and Jamie Codd.
Native Heather ran out an easy winner of the five-year-old and upwards mares maiden in the hands of Brian Hamilton. (Keep an eye on the last fence where Princess Plaisir and Gordon Elliott refused and brought down Not A Bother Tohim and Eamon Magee in the process)
Paddies Boy and Davy Russell ran out an impressive eight length winner of the six-year-old maiden for handler James Lambe. The son of Astronef went on to claim two further point-to-point races and also won two hunter chases.
The open lightweight was claimed by Jackie Kidd aboard Greyventure. The pair kept on gamely from the last to get up in the closing stages and deny Windover by half a length. Greyventure won four point-to-point races in total.
Spring Tour ran out an easy winner of the seven-year-old and upwards maiden but race was subsequently awarded to West Of The Bann and Cathal Swords. As Spring Tour was disqualified due to the presence of a prohibited substance.
The concluding race, the winners of one saw an impressive winner in Shanogue who ran out a 15-length winner with Jimmy Henry in the saddle.
