Pointers on Track

Former pointers continue to blossom in graded company at Punchestown

Sunday saw two former pointers, Andy Dufresne and Carefully Selected take the two feature events on the afternoon's card at the Kildare venue.

The graded-hurdle on the card was the Grade 2 Sky Bet Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle.

It was  the Borris house four-year-old maiden winner, Andy Dufresne who stayed on best in the closing stages to fend off Captain Guinness by three-parts of a length.

The exciting son of Doyen was sold for £330,000 following his debut win in Borris.

Connections are of the opinion that he just got outstayed in Navan back in December, where he finished second to the well-regarded Latest Exhibition over an extended two-and-a-half-miles.

"He got beat by a good horse of Paul Nolan’s (Latest Exhibition) the last day in Navan where he probably outstayed us but that was more like it today.

He took a bit of organising around the last bend but when he straightened up he jumped the last well," said Gordon Elliott to irishracing.com.

The Grade 3 Killiney Novice chase was the feature chase of the day, which saw just six runners go to post in what was a high quality field.

A facile winner of a four-year-old maiden in Monksgrange for Ted Walsh in 2017, Carefully Selected took this graded contest in convincing fashion to remain unbeaten over fences to date.

The departure of Speak Easy at the final fence saw the son of Well Chosen go on to account for a 24 length victory over the highly regarded City Island.

Connections are now thinking that he may just run once more, possibly at the Dublin Racing Festival, before heading across the water to Cheltenham in March.

"I hadn’t planned running at the Dublin Racing Festival but maybe he could go for something just after that, before Cheltenham.

The way he went around there the National Hunt Chase would be right up his street but we have to keep the RSA open as well," said Willie Mullins to irishracing.com
