Burrows Edge picked up the biggest success of his career when he came from off the pace to land a dramatic renewal of the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton on Saturday.
Second in a four-year-old maiden at Largy behind last year’s Pertemps Final-third Not Many Left, the seven-year-old was sent off as a 7/1 shot for the £45,000 contest, with Nico De Boinville biding his time, as he steadily introduced him into the race, so that he was only coming on terms coming the final two flights.
However that was only the start of the dramas in the 2m 5f contest, with fellow Irish pointing graduates, Debestyman and Notre Pari both exiting at the last, with the former, Shay Barry’s Ballindenisk winner looking particularly unfortunate, as he parted company with rider Michael Nolan whilst looking the likely winner.
That paved the way for Burrows Edge to come through and continue the good fortunes that owner Michael Buckley has enjoyed with his purchases from Warren Ewing’s Bernice Stables, crossing the line nine lengths clear of Vive Le Roi.
Winning trainer Nicky Henderson told RacingTV: "That looked as if he is was well stuck in the mud at three out.
"He had a fall and you could still see he had Ludlow on his mind, and he is a bit like that. I won't say he isn't brave, but he has a mind that takes plenty of clearing.
"He is talented, but he is a horse that has got his quirks - there is no doubt about that.
"He is a horse that ought to be jumping fences and he was running a good race at Ludlow until he fell.
"I can see that happening (staying over hurdles). I can't see any point in going to Bangor-on-Dee to win a Å3,000 novice chase. We want try to get his confidence back and have a crack at another one of these.
"He has finished that enjoying himself, which is always a good thing. That is not his ground and he will be miles better on better ground.
"We will look at Coral Cups and things like that."
