Robert McCoubrey, a leading bookmaker has passed away.
Robert was a regular within the betting rings at point-to-points in Northern Ireland, whilst away from point-to-points, he was one of the leading players in the country.
Alongside his role within the bookies ring, Robert also owned a number of horses across a number of decades.
Posting on Twitter, Robert’s bookmaking colleague Ray Nicholas posted: “The passing of a big personality Robert Mc Coubrey, a fearless layer, a lover of p2p in Northern Ireland. He will be sadly missed from the betting ring. RIP Robert 20-11-2017”.
The Belfast Telegraph reported that Robert passed away on Monday evening having been in action at Kirkistown point-to-point just two days earlier.
Bryan Gault, of Gaultstats was another to post his tributes to Robert, writing: “RIP Robert McCoubrey, Northern Irish bookmaking legend and decent man who passed away today. Every March quick to support Gaultstats charity. That favourite will no longer be ‘painted on’ in the bottom pitch at Down Royal. Every outside man running down the hill.”
