NEXT GEN: Ben Love

Ben Love is our latest novice rider to feature in our next generation section. The 18 year-old school student rode his first point-to-point winner on the opening day of the new season at Castletown-Geoghegan on Cee Jay McBride. The pair have since been third at Tinahely and sixth at Dowth Hall last weekend.

The Meath native rides out for Gavin Cromwell at the weekends and has had six rides to date.

Name: Ben Love
Age: 18
Town: Dunshaughlin

How did you become involved in racing?

I began riding in a riding school when I was four. I started riding out for Gavin when I was 14 and then when I was in Transition year I decided to go to RACE which I learned a lot from.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

While I was at RACE, Barry my instructor told me that to have success with horses 80 % is hard work.

What's your favorite course?

Fairyhouse which is my local track.

What's your favorite sport outside racing?

I play Rugby for my school and I do a bit of boxing for my fitness levels. I also have my own hunter and I try to get out with the Ward Union hunt as much as I can.

Thistlecrack or Sizing John?

Thistlecrack. I have always loved him since he began his racing career over hurdles.

Give us a horse to watch out for?

Weakfield. He won his four-year-old maiden for Gavin Cromwell last week and he is a very exciting horse for the future.

What was the best day of your racing life?

Riding my first winner aboard Cee Jay McBride at Castletown-Geoghegan.

What improvements would you make to point to pointing?

It would be good to maybe have more specific novice rider’s races throughout the season.

Who is the last person you want to be upsides going to the last?

Jamie Codd or Derek O’Connor.

Who’s your biggest influence?

I work for Gavin Cromwell who has been very helpful since I started. Breen Kane who works in Gavin’s with me has also been helped me a lot with my riding.

Ambitions For this season?

To stay injury free and ride a few more winners.
