Hawthorn Cottage gained her due reward when she took the four-year-old mares’ maiden at Knockinroe in November. The Warren Ewing-trained winner had been placed on three out of her four previous starts behind some high class mares. Ridden prominently throughout, Hawthorn Cottage disputed the lead for much of the contest where she held a strong advantage approaching the final fence before going onto win by seven lengths over her runner-up. Out of the winning mare, Miss Kilkeel, Hawthorn Cottage is also from the family of Grade 1 winner Morceli and this consistent mare looks the sort that will be a real addition to any trainer’s yard in mares’ races over the coming seasons.
