A-Z of 2017/18 Season

The opening meeting was cancelled on Saturday 07th Ocotber at Toomebridge.

Castletown-Geoghegan 08th October:
•    Napoleon Blue won the opening race of the season for Colin Bowe and Barry O’Neill.
•    There was a strong line-up in the open which was won by A Decent Excuse. Former Grade 1 winner Gilgamboa and last season’s champion pointer Ourmanmassini also ran.
•    Three novice riders rode their first winners- Adam Feeney (Sweet Destination) Michael O’Sullivan (A Decent Excuse) and Ben Love (Cee Jay Mc Bride).

Loughanmore 14th October:
•    Derek O’Connor had his first winner of the season aboard Blue Flight in the four-year-old maiden.
•    Jamie Codd also rode his first winner aboard Frozen Motion in the mares’ maiden.
•    Milan Dancer won the older maiden for Noel Kelly and Noel McParlan. She went on to win a further three times including winning the Gain Mares’ final.

Loughrea 15th October:
•    Michael O’Sullivan and A Decent Excuse registered their second success of the season in the open.

Rathcannon 22nd October:
•    There was a walkover in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden as the Enda Bolger-trained Youcannotbeserious was the only declared runner from 12 initial entries.
•    Wilcosdiana made a winning start to the season when she won the mares open. She would go on to score three times and is this year’s champion point-to-point mare.

Tinahely 22nd October:
•    Whisperinthebreeze won the four-year-old maiden for Timmy Hyde. He is now in the care of Jessica Harrington and won a maiden hurdle at Naas in March.
•    There was local success for John Edward Walsh as Dino’s Benefit won the mares’ winner of one.

Portrush 28th October:
•    The four-year-old maiden was won by Weakfield. His runner-up was Brace Yourself from the Warren Ewing yard. He was sold at Cheltenham November sale for £165,000 to Mags O’Toole and Noel Meade and was the first autumn four-year-old runner to win on the track when he won the bumper at Down Royal at Christmas.

Lisronagh 28th October:
•    The four-year-old mares’ maiden was the first divide of the season. Won by Daylight Katie and Lust For Glory (sold for £240,000 to Highflyer at Cheltenham November & won her bumper for Nicky Henderson at Ludlow on 8th May).
•    Getaway had a double with Lust For Glory and Getaway Trump
•    Danny Kirwan won the 2nd Division for Pat Doyle. He won his bumper at Kempton for Paul Nicholls in February.
•    Champion lady rider, Liz Lalor rode her first winner of the season aboard Defacto Lady.

Dowth Hall 30th October:
•    A record 5,000 crowd attended.
•    Good Man Jim won four-year-old maiden and was sold for £360,000 to Roger Brookhouse.

Roscommon & Grennan were cancelled on the 05th November.

Tinahely 05th November:
•    The Wicklow Foxhounds held an additional fixture which was their first meeting to stage in over 20 years.
•    Dantes king won his 7th point-to-point when he held on by a head over Sammantom in the open with Roderic Kavanagh aboard.

Loughbrickland 11th November:
•    Derby won the four-year-old maiden by 12l for Denis Murphy. He won the p2p bumper at Gowran by 11l for Willie Mullins & Supreme Horse Racing Club.
•    Windsor Avenue won the five-year-old geldings’ maiden and went on to win two bumpers for Brian Ellison. He is a half-brother to Malone Road and Ravenhill Road.

Dromahane 12th November:
•    First southern meeting of the season.
•    Aidan Fitzgerald had two four-year-old winners with Queens Cave and Court Master.
•    Queens Cave was sold for £175,000 to David Pipe. She won her bumper at Uttoxeter in February and was second in a Listed mare’s bumper at Sandown in March.

Ballinaboola 12th November:
•    Know The Score won the four-year-old maiden for Sean Doyle. He was sold for £380,000 to David Pipe and won his bumper by 13l at Towcester in February before finishing 14th in the Cheltenham bumper.

Kirkistown 18th November:
•    Sometime Soon won the four-year-old maiden for David Christie. He was sold for £225,000 to Mags O’Toole/G Elliott and won his bumper at Fairyhouse in February.
•    Patrick McGuigan rode his first winner aboard Adamstown in the winners of two.

Turtulla 19th November:
•    A new track for the Golden Vale (F)
•    Roger Quinlan had a double with Beakstown and Cloudy Day.

Lingstown 19th November:
•    Jamie Codd had a double- I Am Sailing and Venitien De Mai in the banks race.
•    Barry O’Neill had a double – In Arrears and Johnny Sue.

Cork Hunter Chase 19th November:
•    Wilcosdiana won by 11l in the hands of Maxine O’Sullivan having survived a bad mistake at the last.

Corbeagh House was cancelled on the 26th November

Knockinroe 26th November:
•     The Suir Vale (H) held their fixture at the new track Knockinroe.
•    This season’s joint champion novice rider, Sean O’Keeffe rode his first winner of the season aboard Buckie Cullen and went on to ride 11 winners.

Boulta 26th November:
•    Lorcan Kavanagh rode his first winner aboard Sea Beat in the open.

Moira 02nd December:
•    The Iveagh (F)’s rescheduled meeting.
•    Daire McConville rode his first winner aboard He Knows My Name.
•    The ill-fated Lagan Island won his first race of the season. He would go onto win a further two consecutive races.

Mainstown 03rd December:
•    Straight Red won the four-year-old maiden for Colin Bowe before going on to make £300,000 at the Cheltenham December sale.
•    Last season champion pointer, Ourmanmassini won his first race of the season when he beat Gilgamboa in the Ladies open.
•    Conor Houlihan rode his first winner aboard Racing Again in the older maiden.

Ballindenisk 03rd December:
•    The second walkover of the season took place in the confined maiden when Truckers Time was the only declared runner.
•    UK p2p rider, Edward Doggrell rode his first Irish winner aboard Carrignagapple in the winners of two.

Borris 10th December:
•    The four-year-old mares’ and geldings’ maidens both divided.
•    Rob James and Barry O’Neill both had trebles.
•    Trevelyn’s Corn, winner of the second division of the four-year-old geldings’ maiden was sold for £400,000 to Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls in the Cheltenham December sale.

Tattersalls 10th December meeting was cancelled due to the snow.

Boulta 10th December:
•    Rattle The Cage won the winners of two which was his second success at Boulta for the Lalor family.

Down Royal 26th December:
•    Gilgamboa won the hunters chase beating Venitien De Mai by three quarters of a length.

Limerick 27th December:
•    Burning Ambition won the hunters chase by 13l over Follow The Moon.

Templenacarriga 31st December:
•    Former Thyestes Chase winner, My Murphy returned to winning ways in the open for Willie Burke and Richie Harding.

Aghabullogue 07th January:
•    Derek O’Connor rode a double on the day aboard Bay Ambition and Sydney Paget.
•    This was one of 8 wins that Sydney Paget would win this season before being crowned champion pointer.

Tinahely 14th January:
•    Former Grade one performer Marinero, won the open for his new owner, David Maxwell.
•    The late William Codd trained his final p2p winner with Bold Sky in the mares’ maiden.
•    Lighting Tunes won the older maiden for Peter Maher. He went on to be Paul Carberry’s mount in the Golden Button Challenge.

Killeagh 14th January:
•    Moskovite won the mares’ maiden for Denis Hogan but was later disqualified for testing positive for a prohibited substance.

Kilfeacle 21st January was cancelled.

Thurles 21st January:
•    Gilgamboa won his second hunter chase of the season when beating Foxrock by 10 lengths.

Tyrella 27th January:
•    Eddie’s Miracle won his fifth point-to-point of his career when he beat Quite Account by 2l.

Dungarvan 28th January:
•    Jamie Codd had a treble- Portnablagh, Gills Pet & La Cavsa Nostra.
•    Former Grade one winner, Morning Assembly made his point-to-point debut and finished second to Rue Hill in the open.

Nenagh 28th January:
•    Minella For Value won his first race of the season for Declan Queally with Liz Lalor in the saddle.

Ballyvodock 28th January was cancelled.

Belharbour 04th February:
•    First four-year-old maiden. Envious Editor won for Nicky Stokes and Liam Quinlan.
•    Dlauro won the five-year-old geldings’ maiden for Donnchadh Doyle and Rob James and went onto sell for £410,000 at the Tatttersalls Ireland Cheltenham February sale which was a record price for a five-year-old between the flags.

Tallow 04th February:
•    The four-year-old maiden was won by Some Operator for Cormac Doyle while James Hannon rode a double on the day aboard Winter Magic and Sullane Legend.

Ballinaboola 04th February:
•    The four-year-old maiden won by Envoi Allen for the Colin Bowe and Barry O’Neill duo. The son of Muhtathir was then sold for £400,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham February sale to Tom Malone.

Kirkistown 10th February:
•    Former Grade one winner, Morning Assembly won the open beating Vinnie Luck by five lengths under Conor Fahy.

Oldtown 10th February:
•    Jamie Codd rode a double aboard La Cavsa Nostra and Sizing Coal.
•    Niall Prendergast rode his first winner in the older maiden on the John Hanlon-trained Calderone.

Punchestown 11th February:
•    Gilgamboa won his third hunter chase of the season in a race that was normally run at Leopardstown.

Fairyhouse 14th February:
•    Allannahs Gold took proceedings under Derek O’Connor for Declan Queally.

Knockanard 17th February:
•    Having been rescheduled from the previous week, James Kenny teamed up with his father Liam to win aboard Our Henrietta in the mares’ winner of one.

Cragmore 18th February:
•    Joint leading novice rider this season Shane Fitzgerald, registered a double on the day on Sams Profile and Pleasant Hill.

Kildorrery 18th February:
•    Minella For Value secured his second win of the season in the open where he beat Winter Magic by a comfortable 25 lengths.

Punchestown 18th February:
•    Enniskillen won the Farmers hunt race for the third consecutive year for the Peter Maher yard.
•    James Murphy rode his first winner aboard his father’s Bothair Clei in the open for novice riders.

Farmaclaffey 24th February:
•    Novice rider Daire McConville enjoyed a successful day in the saddle having had a treble with his winners coming from He Knows My Name, Celtic Thunder and Longtymegone.

Fairyhouse 24th February:
•    Sizing Coal took the hunters chase under Jamie Codd for the Jim Dreaper yard.

Tinahely 25th February:
•    The Hollow Chap, who is a half-brother to the Cheltenham Festival winner Western Warhorse, won the four-year-old maiden for Colin Bowe and Barry O’Neill.

Bandon 25th February:
•    Fenno’s Storm provided Declan Queally with his 200th point-to-point winner.

Killaloe 25th February: Cancelled

The snow claimed all meetings on the opening weekend of March- Tyrella, The Pigeons, Lemonfield, Lismore and Borris House.

Borris House 09th March:
•    At the rescheduled meeting Gordon Elliott took the four-year-old maiden with Andy Dufresne who was owned by Elliott’s head travelling girl, Camilla Sharples. The son of Doyen was sold for £330,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham Festival sale.

Lismore 10th March:
•    The rescheduled Lismore meeting saw Eoin O’Brien have a double with Destinys Choice and Judkin.
•    Tom Feeney rode Turndownthevolume to victory in the winners of two while his son Adam was second aboard Sweet Destination.

Kirkistown 10th March:
•    Tough racing conditions were endured where Mark O’Hare had a double with Ground Invasion and Tin Town Liz.

Gowran Park 10th March:
•    Fenno’s Storm took the Tetratema hunter chase by half a length over Venitien De Mai.
•    Derby won the point-to-point bumper having won at Loughbrickland in November.

Lingstown 11th March:
•    Redbridge Gold supplied Sean Staples with his first winner in the five-year-old mares’ maiden.
•    Vital Island scored for the second time over the weekend in the banks race having also won at Borris house on the Friday.

Ballyarthur 11th March:
•    The slowest race of the year took place at Ballyarthur.
•    The winner of the adjacent maiden for novice riders refused at the last and got over at second attempt where he finished alone. The initial leader refused at the last, another runner had pulled up at the penultimate fence but joined in again and refused at the last fence and then unseated his rider.

Belclare 11th March:
•    Luke Murphy had a double with Brightsideoflife and Bloodstream.
•    Brendan Lyons had his first winner between the flags coming from Thepremierbroker in the older maiden.

Horse and Jockey 11th March:
•    Roger Quinlan had a double with Castletown Quary and Cloudy Day.
•    Ask Mary won the confined maiden and went on to win on her next three starts under Liz Lalor.


Cheltenham Foxhunters 16th March:
•    Balnaslow finished seventh and the best of the Irish with Burning Ambition and On The Fringe in eight and ninth.

Ballynoe 17th March:
•    Johnny Barry rode his 100th point-to-point winner aboard the Gerard Kelleher-trained Mac’s Legend.
•    The Gain mares’ final went to the Noel Kelly-trained Milan Dancer.

Dromahane 18th March:
•    Johnny Barry continued a successful weekend with a double on Minella Indo and Blue Morpho.

Down Royal 19th March:
•    Eddies Miracle won the hunter chase by five lengths over Clondaw Frisby.

Tyrella 19th March:
•    The rescheduled Tyrella meeting saw Derek O’Connor ride a double aboard Birchdale and Longhouse Music.

Durrow 24th March:
•    The Pierce Power-trained Treasure Dillon supplied Sans Frontieres with his first four-year-old winner.

Moig South 24th March:
•    The Stonehall Harriers got to hold their meeting at the new track at Moig South on their third attempt.
•    Derek O’Connor registered a treble on the day with Legends Gold, Dancingatdunraven and Sydney Paget.

Ballyragget 25th March:
•    Jamie Codd had a treble with winners coming from Coolnagorna Giggs, Financial outcome and Take Revenge.

Durrow 25th March:
•    Placings were reversed in the five-year-old mares’ maiden with Devito’sredrobin being awarded the race and Burn Baby Byrne in the runner-up spot.
•    Festival Opera supplied Emma Smith-Chaston with her first Irish point-to-point winner.

Liscarroll 25th March:
•    President Michael D. Higgins attended the point-to-point.
•    Ciaran Fennessy had his first winner back aboard Lisnagar Oscar since a fall at Rathcannon in October 2016.

Downpatrick Hunter Chase 25th March:
•    Timewaitsfornoone took the hunter chase by a length over He Knows My Name.

Inch 28th March:
•    The Alchemyst provided Pat Collins will his 100th point-to-point winner.

Loughanmore 31st March:
•    Malone Road won the four-year-old geldings’ maiden for Stuart Crawford and went on to top the Goffs UK Aintree sale when selling for £325,000 to Tom Malone and Gordon Elliott.

Quakerstown 01st April:
•       The Roisin Hickey-trained Champagne Platinum took the four-year-old maiden seven years after Champagne Fever won the same race for connections.

Castletown-Geoghegan 01st April:
•    2015 Grade One Ryanair chase winner, Uxizandre won the open under Barry O’Neill for his new handler Padraig Roche.

Curraghmore 01st April:
•    Luke Murphy rode a treble with his winners coming from Rock On Carlos, Ballybough Nora and Ballinasilla.

Loughanmore 02nd April:
•    Novice rider Patrick McGuigan secured his first double from Milan Flyer and Templepoint.

Cork Hunter Chases 02nd April:
•    He Knows My Name won the mares hunter chase for Marshall Watson and Johnny King.
•    Oscar Contender won the 3m hunter chase for David Harry Kelly and James Hannon.
•    Wilcosdiana won the 2m4f hunter chase for Eugene O’Sullivan and Michael O’Sullivan.
•    Judkin won the gelding’s bumper for Jimmy Mangan and Eoin O’Brien.
•    Portnablagh won the mares’ bumper for Gordon Elliott and Declan Lavery.

Loughbrickland 07th April was cancelled.

Dromahane 08th April:
•    James Kenny rode Shot To Hell to success in the four-year-old maiden for Pat Doyle and Gigginstown House stud.

Aintree Foxhunters 12th April:
•    Balnaslow went one better than his previous year’s effort to win under Derek O’Connor in the colours of the late Mrs Peggy Hagan.

Moira 14th April:
•    Northern rider Noel McParlan was on the scoreboard when Dessie Deschamps won the five-year-old-geldings maiden.

Ballyarthur 15th April was cancelled.

Bellurgan Park 15th April:
•    The rescheduled fixture saw novice rider Timmy Love ride his fifth winner of the season aboard Cubanera.

Stradbally 15th April:
•    Following two divides on the day eight races took place.

Rathcannon 15th April:
•    A rescheduled meeting which saw Jamie Codd ride a treble aboard Dramatic Approach, Yourllookinwell and Minella For Value.

Tramore 16th April:
•    Macs Legend won by seven lengths over Caniwillyegiveme.

Fairyhouse 17th April:
•    Sizing Coal saw off Fenno’s Storm by a head for the Jim Dreaper yard with Jamie Codd in the saddle.

Largy 20th April:
•    Sean O’Keeffe rode his second four-year-old winner aboard Wild Polly in the mares’ maiden.
•    The Liz Lalor ridden-Red Devil Boys held off Sir Des Champs by a length.

Largy 21st April:
•    Lecale’s Article, winner of the four-year-old maiden, topped the Goffs Punchestown sale for €320,000.
•    Watyawaitingfor won the older maiden for Robert Armstrong who is a member of the Killultagh, Old Rock & Chichester hunt that run Largy.

Courtown 21st April:
•    Rob James rode a treble in the first three races aboard Needhams Gap, Emmas Joy and Rushhour Ryan at the rescheduled fixture.

Dromahane 22nd April:
•    Conor Costello rode his first winner in the open for novice riders aboard Final Gift for his father John.

Ballysteen 22nd April:
•    Jamie Codd got a fall in the four-year-old maiden and suffered a fracture of his L3 vertebra which ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

Fairyhouse 22nd April was cancelled.

Punchestown Festival:
•    Just Wait And See won the Ladies Cup.
•    Auvergnat won the La Touche.
•    Alpha Male won the Bishopscourt Cup
•    Caid Du Berlais won the Champion hunters chase
•    Josies Orders won the banks race
•    Katie Walsh and Nina Carberry both retired from race riding.

Taylorstown 28th April:
•    Mark O’Hare had a double with Everybreathyoutake and Captain Cook.

Lisronagh 28th April:
•    Another comfortable winner for Liz Lalor in the ladies open aboard Fenno’s Storm to see off Bothair Clei by 15 lengths.

Stowlin 29th April:
•    The East Galway Foxhounds unveiled a new track at Stowlin where Western champion, Derek O’Connor had a double with Carrigmoorna Wood and Buster Valentine.

Monksgrange 29th April:
•    Barry O’Neill had a treble from Turndownthevolume, The Con Man and Faithfulness at the rescheduled fixture.

Ballindenisk 05th May:
•    Mark Scallan rode and trained the winner of the four-year-old maiden with Robyndzone.

Loughrea 06th May:
•    Kate Harrington trained her first point-to-point winner with Story Of Friends in the four-year-old maiden.
•    Barry O’Neill had a treble with Cavite Beta, Three Loud Knocks and Chosen Flame.

Stradbally 06th May:
•    Andrew Phelan rode his first winner aboard his father’s Batchelors Walk in the older maiden for novice riders.

Dromahane 06th May:
•    Sydney Paget recorded his eight consecutive success of the season which was one of three winners for Derek O’Connor.

Dawstown 07th May:
•    Johanna Walton rode her third Irish point-to-point winner aboard Madam Cloud for Damian Murphy who the English native is based with.

Down Royal 07th May:
•    Sizing Rome took the hunter chase by four and a half lengths over Eddies Miracle.

Tipperary 10th May:
•    Maybeywhoknowsmabey won the hunters chase
•    Carrigmoorna Wood won the mares’ p2p.ie bumper
•    Famous Saying won the geldings’ p2p.ie bumper

Loughanmore 12th May:
•    Loughanmore staged the Mid Antrim fixture which saw a large entry where four races were divided which resulted in 10 races.

Borris House 13th May was cancelled.

Tallanstown 13th May was cancelled.

Bartlemy 13th May:
•    Ask For Glory won the four-year-old geldings maiden and went on to top the Goffs UK May sale having been sold for £280,000 to Tom Malone.
•    Novice rider Shane Baragry rode a double aboard DJ Sasha and Hahadi.

Killarney Hunter Chase 14th May:
•    Minella For Value went one better than last year to win by 15 lengths over on The Fringe.

Necarne 18th May:
•    The four-year-old mares’ maiden was divided with Ebaa Hana winning the opening race and Miss Batten taking the second division who is a half-sister to Shotgun Paddy.

Downpatrick Hunter Chase 18th May:
•    Mac’s Legend won his second hunter chase of the season for Gerard Kelleher.

Necarne 19th May:
•    Sliabh Mhuire Lass recorded her third point-to-point victory of the season for Paurick and Derek O’Connor when running out a four length victory of the mares winners of three contest.

Dromahane 20th May:
•    It was a day to remember for rider Maxine O’Sullivan who on the scoreboard twice, first as a rider when guiding Oighear Dubh to victory and then as an owner when Ardrahan took the older maiden in the hands of Gary Noonan. 

Oldcastle 20th May:
•    Drawn N Drank gained a deserved success in the open following four runner-up efforts this spring at the rescheduled fixture.
•    Barry O’Neill rode a treble and was crowned the Eastern champion with 27 winners.

Tralee 26th May:
•    Johnny Barry had a treble with Black Centaur, Crossley Tender and Cloudy Day.

Portrush 26th May:
•    Larry O’Carroll had a double with Little Miss Darsi and Lottolove at the rescheduled fixture.
•    Barry O’Neill was crowned the Northern champion for the first time with 16 winners.

Inchydoney 27th May:
•    Drawn N Drank recorded his second consecutive victory in the open for Eugene O’Sullivan.

Kinsale 02nd June:
•    Derek O’Connor had a treble with winners coming from Wait For No One, Fox Valley and Sliabh Mhuire Lass.
 
Kinsale 03rd June:
•    Shane Fitzgerald had a winner with Est Illic which left him one winner behind Sean O’Keeffe in the novice rider’s title.

Ballingarry 03rd June:
•    Conor Orr had his first Irish point-to-point winner aboard Red As Rust in the mares’ maiden.
•    Gabrielleamee won the mares’ open having finished fourth at Kinsale the previous evening.

Ballingarry 04th June:
•    Shane Fitzgerald won the four-year-old geldings’ maiden on Presenting Dancer and finished the joint novice rider champion alongside Sean O’Keeffe with 11 winners.
•    Barry O’Neill won his second riders title having ridden 58 winners this season.

Listowel 04th June:
•    The veteran On The Fringe was a six length winner of the hunter chase in the hands of Aine O’Connor.
